Begin with 2 minutes of stillness and silence before God.
Verses 11-13 are part of David’s prayer for perseverance. His enemies are constantly looking for ways to bring him down, but David doesn’t want to handle things His way. He’s asking God to teach him how to handle things God’s way.
David follows this with a request for a smooth or level path. When I think about the word smooth, I think of easy. That’s not quite what David was asking for though. If the path was smooth or level, there would be no place for David’s enemies to hide. It’s a lot easier to face down your enemies when you can see them! If the path is smooth, his enemies cannot hide from him.
While the rest of this chapter is David’s prayers for Himself, the chapter ends with a prayer for God’s people. David tells us to “wait for the Lord” twice, but this does not imply a passive waiting. He doesn’t mean that we should sit around and hide. This is an active waiting. Don’t give up! Keep fighting the good fight! Continue to do what you know is right and wait for the Lord to tell you to do something differently. Be persistent in your faith.

- What have you been trying to handle your own way? Pray and ask God to teach you His ways instead.
- Maybe there is something that you’ve been praying persistently for with great perseverance. What would it mean for you to wait for the Lord in this season?

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for Your goodness during the good and the bad times. Even if we cannot personally see any goodness in our times of struggle, we can remain confident that goodness will come out of it because of You. Thank You for teaching us to remain patient, brave, and courageous during our times of struggle. Help us to keep our hearts and minds focused on You no matter what we are facing in life.
