Begin with two minutes of silence and stillness before God.
If you've ever introduced yourself at Starbucks only to have your name butchered on the cup, with "Bill" becoming "Phil" and "Sarah" becoming "Cereal," you can appreciate why Jesus's brother Judas went by "Jude." After all, when your name shares a headline with the guy who betrayed Jesus, you start looking for nicknames in a hurry.
Jude wasn't always a believer. In fact, at one point, he and his brothers thought Jesus had lost His mind (John 7:5; Mark 3:21). But the resurrection changed everything. Jude went from a skeptical little brother to a passionate preacher, writing a short but punchy letter to believers everywhere.
What was so urgent that Jude couldn't just write about salvation and grace? The church was being infiltrated. People were sneaking in, claiming to follow Jesus while actually twisting His grace into permission slips for sin. They mocked what they didn't understand, stirred up division, and lived however they pleased.
Jude's letter feels heavy because he doesn't sugarcoat it: sin is serious, and God doesn't ignore it. But tucked inside this fire alarm of a book, Jude also gives us practical advice for living faithfully in a messed-up world. Here's what he says:
1. Hold On to What You Believe
Jude urges believers to "defend the faith that God has entrusted once for all time" (v. 3 NLT). That doesn't mean picking Facebook fights or memorizing snappy comebacks. It means actually knowing what you believe and why you believe it. If someone asks, "Is Jesus really the only way?" or "Can the Bible be trusted?" do you have an answer beyond, "Uh… my pastor said so"?
Our culture is full of "spiritual buffet" thinking—take what you like, leave the rest. But faith isn't a salad bar. We need to know the truth well enough to stand on it when it's challenged.
2. Keep Growing in Your Faith
Jude says to "build each other up… pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus" (vv. 20–21). Translation: Faith grows best in three ways—community, prayer, and patience.
Community matters. Like those nine miners trapped underground in Pennsylvania, huddling together to survive the cold, we need each other to stay spiritually alive.
Prayer matters. Not as a fire alarm we pull when life burns down, but as a daily lifeline to God.
And patience… well, that's the one nobody likes. We want Amazon Prime answers. God prefers slow cookers. Waiting on Him isn't wasted time; it's where faith deepens.
3. Share Your Faith with Others
Finally, Jude calls us to show mercy to doubters and "snatch others from the flames" (vv. 22–23). In other words, faith isn't meant to stay private. If someone near you is struggling spiritually, huddle around them. If a friend doesn't know Jesus, share your faith—even if it's awkward. Eternity is worth the risk.
Application
Jude may be the shortest book in the Bible, but it packs a powerful punch: faith isn't fragile; however, it does require defense, growth, and generosity. Sin is destructive, but God's grace is stronger. Here's the challenge: take a step in each direction, answer one honest question about your faith, pray daily for strength, and look for one person to encourage in Jesus' name.
Because living faithfully in a fallen world isn't easy—but it is possible.
Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
