Saul Saw

Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

The Bible is filled with stories of life transformation, from the woman at the well to the blind receiving sight, and from David’s rise from shepherd to king. But few stories are as dramatic as Saul’s encounter on the road to Damascus. This is, without a doubt, one of my favorite stories in all of Scripture, showing that no one—absolutely no one—is too far gone for Christ’s love to radically change and transform them into a champion for His cause.

Let’s set the scene. To put it bluntly, Saul was the worst. The first verse of Acts 9 begins with, “Now Saul was still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord.” Not exactly the way you’d expect one of the future heroes of the faith to be described. Saul had Christians imprisoned and put to death. He was present at the stoning of Stephen and was the face of Christian persecution—a living supervillain.

But then, one day, Saul saw. He saw a bright, blinding light, and he heard a voice that shook him to his core. This moment, now known as the "Damascus Road moment," completely flipped his life upside down. His passion for persecution turned into a fervor for pointing others to Christ. Just like that, in the eyes of Christ, his past was wiped away. Christ didn’t focus on what Saul had done; He focused on what was yet to come.

As much as Christ forgave Saul’s past, I can relate to Ananias in verse 13, where he says, “I have heard from many people about this man, how much harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem, and he has authority here from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” Or, in my own words, “You want me to talk to whom about what?”

How often do we let our own doubts get in the way? We convince ourselves that, just because we can’t see the change from our perspective, there’s no way Christ can work in someone’s life. But Saul’s conversion is the ultimate story of hope—proof that even a “supervillain” can become a believer. It’s a reminder that no one is beyond the reach of God’s grace.

So, whoever God has placed on your heart—whether they seem far from Him or impossible to reach—remember, they’re not too far gone. Continue to lift them up in prayer, remain faithful, and trust in a God who never stops pursuing and never gives up, no matter the past.

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • Use the S.O.A.P. Method to study God’s Word.
  • SCRIPTURE: What stands out to you in today’s passage?
  • OBSERVATION: What is this text saying? What is the context? How does it fit with the verses before and after it? Are there any commands, instructions, or promises?
  • APPLICATION: How can you apply this verse to your life? What does this mean today? What is God saying to you?
  • PRAYER: Respond to the passage in prayer. Ask God to help you apply this truth to your life and spend some time listening to what He may be telling you.
