Revelation 21 paints a beautiful and hopeful picture of the culmination of God's redemptive plan, the coming of a new heaven and a new earth. This chapter unveils the breathtaking vision of a restored creation, free from sin, sorrow, and death, where God dwells among His people. It is a promise of eternal hope and renewal, fulfilling the longings of every believer's heart.

John's vision begins with the sight of a new heaven and earth, signifying the complete renewal and restoration of God's creation. The absence of sea symbolizes the removal of chaos and separation, replaced by harmony and unity under God's sovereign rule. The holy city, the new Jerusalem, descends from heaven, radiant and adorned like a bride prepared for her husband.

This heavenly city signifies the intimate union between God and His people, where His presence dwells among them. The imagery of God wiping away every tear illustrates the complete eradication of pain, sorrow, and suffering. It is a place where death is no more, and joy reigns eternally in the presence of the Almighty.

Revelation 21 reassures believers that God is making all things new. It invites us to anticipate the fulfillment of God's promise of eternal restoration and dwelling in His presence forever. This vision serves as a beacon of hope, especially in times of trial and hardship, reminding us that our future is secured in God's hands.

As followers of Christ, this passage encourages us to live with an eternal perspective. It challenges us to fix our eyes on the hope of the new heaven and earth, shaping our values and priorities according to the eternal truths of God's Kingdom. It inspires us to live faithfully, knowing that our citizenship belongs to the heavenly city prepared by God.

This chapter calls us to share this hope with others, inviting them into the promise of eternal life and restoration in Christ. It compels us to be ambassadors of reconciliation, sharing the good news of God's redemptive plan for humanity.

• Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of a new heaven and earth. Help us to live with an eternal perspective, anchored in the hope of Your eternal restoration. Family Devo: Revelation 21

Head  

Throughout this chapter, John tells us that there will be a new heaven and a new earth. He also describes the holy city which will be the new Jerusalem. This new holy city is described to be pure gold with walls made out of twelve precious stones. Not only will there be a new heaven, new earth, and new Jerusalem, but God will also live there among His people. He will wipe away every tear and no evil will be allowed to enter the holy city. Only those whose names are recorded in the Book of Life will be allowed to enter and all unbelievers and the corrupt will be fated to the lake of fire.  

Heart  

Can you imagine a whole city made out of gold? God has given us so many things to look forward to. Not only will we one day get to enter the holy city, but God himself will be among us. He will give freely from the springs of the water of life and encourages us that “all who are victorious will inherit all of these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children”. We have so much to be thankful for because, through God, we receive the greatest gift of all-everlasting life.  

Hands  

Take time to give thanks to God for what He has already done for you and for what He is going to do. Make a list of what you are thankful for and share with a family member or friend.  

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for giving us the greatest gift of all. Thank You that one day all evil will be destroyed and You will live among Your children. Help us to remain thankful for everything that You have already done in our lives and for everything that You are going to do. In Jesus name, amen.
