Head

Is kindness a feeling or an action?

The writer of Psalms 106:1-12 starts by praising the Lord for His goodness and faithful love. He continues to praise God for His mighty acts and how He’s taken care of His people. Verses 6 through 12 recount the story of when God rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt by parting the Red Sea for them to cross to get away from Pharaoh. This section begins with an admittance of sin and wrongdoing. The Israelites (God’s chosen people) rebelled against God, but God saved them anyway. It says, “He saved them for His name’s sake, to make His power known.” 1 John 4:8 says, “God is love.” He is incapable of being anything other than love. Out of that love comes kindness and goodness. He showed His kindness and goodness by saving the Israelites and keeping His promise to them. It was God’s kindness that led the writer of Psalm 106 to repent of sin and lift up praises to God.

Heart

Would it have been kind if God had seen the Israelites were in trouble and just thought “Aw, I’m so sorry you’re in trouble”? Is it showing kindness if we see someone lonely on the playground or at lunch and think “I hate they are alone” but do nothing? God continually proves His love for us through acts of kindness and goodness because that’s who He is. He can’t be anything else. When we put our trust in Jesus, we have His Spirit living in us. Therefore, we have His fruit of kindness and goodness. We have the ability to show kindness to others with action.

Hands

Write down three different ways God has shown His love and kindness to you. Remembering what God has done for me always helps me to trust Him and do what He wants me to do. Now write down one way you can show kindness to someone today. Then go do it.

Prayer: Lord, You are good. You are faithful. You are kind. You are love. You saved the Israelites from their enemies, and You will save me from mine. Thank you, Lord. I praise You for Your mighty acts and wondrous works. I want to show others kindness because You’ve been so good to me. I know I have sinned. I need You to forgive me and restore me. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
