Read Matthew 19
Head
In Matthew 19, Jesus teaches us that caring for the poor is of great importance to God. He wants us to not keep all our money, food, and time for ourselves but to share what we have with those who are in need.
Heart
Matthew 19 is about being selfless instead of selfish. We must keep thinking about others before ourselves. Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to love God with all of your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:36-40). All we have is from God, so He should be the one to tell us how to use or money, talents, and time. When we truly love God, we want to be more like Him and to do things that show that love for Him. Remember that God knows what is best for everyone, and when we are selfish and looking out for ourselves, we aren't following Jesus' example.
Heart
So how do we live each day being selfless rather than selfish? Look for ways to be a helper to those around us. How can we help our family today? Who do we know needs a friend or an encouraging word? Do we really need that latest toy or gadget, or is there someone in need who needs our help or money more? Trust God to show you where you are needed.
Prayer: Heavenly Father – Thank you for all that You provide for us. Thank you that our needs are few because we have You. Help us to know what really matters in life – helping others and not being selfish. May I always be willing to sacrifice for You and when it is hard, give me courage and desire to do Your will. In Jesus' name. Amen.
