Head: Know God's Word | Heart: Love God | Hands: Follow God's Way
Read Psalms 141:3-5
Head
In these three verses, we see David asking God to keep him from sin in his own life. I don’t know about you, but it’s often a lot easier for me to acknowledge sin in someone else’s life than it is for me to acknowledge my own! David lays it out pretty clearly, though. Before he asks God for deliverance from his enemies a few verses down, he first asks God for deliverance from his own sinful heart. That’s pretty powerful to me! I must admit to my sinful ways and ask God to, “Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil…”
Heart
A heart that loves God can’t also love sin. Well, yeah, that makes sense! But what does that even look like? What does that really mean? I’m glad you have those same questions that I do! It means being like David and asking God to guard what comes out of our mouths and not participating in things that we know are wrong or being around people who are doing things that we know are wrong.
If we are followers of Jesus Christ, then we are meant to be set apart. We are not meant to do things as the world does them. It’s not always easy. In fact, it hardly ever IS easy. But we know someone who is always just a prayer away, waiting for us to come to Him with all of our worries and requests! He wants us to come to Him and ask for His help in controlling the things we say and do. After all, He knows we can’t do it in our own power!
Hands
As a family, write down a prayer you can pray together to ask God to help you guard your mouths and hearts from evil. When you feel yourself tempted to do what you want and not listen to God, remember this prayer! Follow up with one another at the end of the day to see how it made a difference.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for You! Thank you for giving us the ability to talk to you whenever we want and for always listening to us when we do. Please help us think about the things that we say and the way that we say them. Help us keep our hearts fixed on You and not on the things of this world. We love You! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
