Read 3 John 1

Head

We know what love is and what love looks like. We love our family, our friends, our pets, our teachers and classmates, our coaches and teammates, etc. We also know what truth means and what it looks like. We are supposed to be honest and sincere in the things we say and do. In 3 John 1:1, John reminds us that love and truth aren’t supposed to be separated: “The elder, To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.” God Himself is both love and truth. Loving someone in truth means to love sincerely through actions that align.

Heart

We are so deeply loved by God, and He calls us to love others in the same way He loves us. When we remember that love and truth go hand in hand, our relationships become stronger and more fruitful. When we try to separate love and truth, things can go sideways for us. If I am having a conversation with a friend where my only goal is to tell them the truth, it can come across as harsh or even cruel. On the other hand, if in a conversation with a family member, my only goal is to speak in love without truth, it can seem shallow or meaningless. It’s when we partner truth with love that we align ourselves with the will of our Father.

Hands

Think of a friend or family member you can encourage this week. Write them a note, send a text, or simply pray for them. As a family, talk about one way you can show both love and truth to one another today (speaking kindly but also being honest).

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You for showing us perfect love and truth through Your son Jesus. Help us love each other truthfully and encourage our friends and family in their walk with You. We love You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
