Head

As a child, whenever I left home to go somewhere my parents wouldn’t be with me, my mom always told me to behave because she knew what I was doing before I got home. Did that mean she had some special ability that allowed her to see what I was doing at all times? Of course not! But guess what? There is someone who knows all our deeds. He sees everything we do. And even more than that, He knows what’s in our hearts, too. Our Heavenly Father knows all the things we do well, but He also knows the areas of our lives we need to improve. And just like any good parent, He promises to help us.

Heart

But even more important to God than just the things we do and say is the health of our hearts. He wants to be our first love. We are told to love Him above all other things, including ourselves. When our hearts are full of love for God, it leaves no room for us to sin (do things we know we shouldn’t do).

Hands

As a family, talk about ways you sometimes forget your “first love” for Jesus (getting busy, distracted, or doing things like prayer and worship out of habit). Make a list of ways to show your love for God this week (showing kindness to those around you, praying for people you may not normally pray for, praising and worship, etc.)

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for seeing us and loving us. Forgive us when our hearts grow cold or distracted. Help us to stay faithful to You, to keep You as our first love, and to live with courage and joy until the day we see You face to face. We love You! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
