Read 2 Peter 1:3-11

Head

God wants us to be holy. In verse 3, Peter tells us He’s given us everything we need to live a godly life. Simply put, that just means living like God. Our example of someone living a godly life is Jesus and we know exactly what that looks like because of the Bible. But Peter goes on in verse 5 to tell us we need to “supplement our faith” with a few extra qualities. We begin our walk with God with faith, but we can’t stop there. We must add goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love to our faith. God doesn’t just hand us these traits though. We must work in partnership with Him to build up our faith so like Peter says in verse 8, “...they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Heart

How can we be sure God has called us and that we are His chosen? It is by doing these things Peter spoke of in verses 5-7. As we see faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love in our lives we have evidence that we are becoming more like Jesus. But Peter also warns us that we must practice these things. We can’t show self-control every now and then or brotherly kindness when we think about it. As any musician or athlete would tell you, the act of practicing must happen at least once every day.

Hands

Write the qualities Peter talks about in this passage on your mirror or an index card to stick on the refrigerator or anywhere else your family will see it more than once a day. Make a point to stop and say a quick prayer every time you see it.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for giving us the blueprint for living. Help us to remember to add to our faith every day. We want to live holy lives. We want to be more like Jesus. We love You! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
