Head: Know God’s Word | Heart: Love God | Hands: Follow God’s Word
Read John 16-17
Head
In Chapter 16, Jesus teaches the disciples about the work of the Holy Spirit. He explains how the Holy Spirit will come when Jesus is no longer physically with them and will live in them. He will speak only what comes from God through Jesus. He continues to share that they will grieve for a short time at His death, but He will soon rejoin them. This is very confusing to the disciples, so Jesus continues to share with them what is coming. Chapter 17 is a prayer from Jesus to God. He asks the Father to glorify Him so they will come to know Him. He prays for the disciples who have followed Him. He asks for their protection from Satan, the evil one. He continues by praying for all believers.
Heart
As His time on earth draws to a close, Jesus wants to prepare believers to continue the work to bring others to know Him. They are struggling to understand all He is sharing. Do you think this would be harder to understand if we did not have the Bible? Because we know Jesus arose from the grave we have hope in our faith. Talk about how the disciples must have felt. When Jesus prays to God with the disciples listening He is allowing them the opportunity to see how prayer is a conversation with our Heavenly Father.
Hands
Talk as a family about the Holy Spirit and what it means to you. Talk about why Jesus left the Holy Spirit to guide us through life. Make a list of those you want to pray for and list the reasons (those who may not believe or have Jesus in their heart, those who are sick, those who are grieving, those you love, etc.)
Prayer: Father, thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to guide us. We are so thankful that Jesus came to show us how much You love us. Just like Jesus prayed for us, thank you for allowing us to pray for others. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
