Read Acts 1-2

Head

Welcome to the Book of Acts! I love the name of this book of the Bible because Acts is truly full of action as Luke chronicles the “acts” of the apostles. In chapters 1 and 2, Jesus ascends to heaven, the disciples choose a replacement for Judas, the Holy Spirit comes on the day of Pentecost, Peter preaches to a crowd in Jerusalem, over 3,000 people are saved, and the early church is born. Whew! That’s a lot of action for two chapters!

Heart

One of our family’s favorite verses is Acts 2:42, which says, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.” Chapter 2 goes on to say that they “gave to anyone as he had need.” These verses remind us of the things we should be devoting our time and energy to: God’s Word, time with other believers, prayer, and generosity. It’s important to focus on these things both corporately (with a group like at Sunday worship, KXP, House Church, or Movement) and personally (spending time in God’s word and prayer just you and God). When we are devoted to these practices, we are doing church like the apostles and early church did - simple and focused on what really matters.

Hands

Think about what the early church was devoted to - God’s Word, time with other believers, prayer, and generosity - and talk about how your family engages in those practices. Is there a practice you do really well or one you would like to grow in?

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for the example of the early church. Help us focus on the things that really matter as we practice the way of Jesus.
