Head

Do you pick out what you’re going to wear each morning or the night before? Do you pick out on Sunday what you’re going to wear for the whole week? I lay out what I’m going to wear to work at night so that I don’t have to think as much early in the morning.

Paul wrote the Book of Colossians which was a letter to the church in a place called Colosse. In chapter 3 Paul tells them about what it means to live a holy life. In verse 12, he calls them “God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved.” If we’ve accepted Jesus as Lord of our lives then we are also part of his chosen people. We are holy and dearly loved. Paul tells the church to “clothe” themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Heart

This verse reminds me of picking out what I’m going to wear each day. I have to put down my phone and stop watching TV to focus on looking in my closet for what I want to wear the next morning. I choose to pick my clothes out at night so that I’m not rushed in the morning. I get to decide what I wear physically. Guess what? We get to decide what we wear in our hearts and minds too. We can decide to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. We may have to “take off” some other things before we “put on” the good things. We have to “take off” our old self which could be selfishness, jealousy, unforgiveness, bitterness, or doubt. The hard part for me is getting rid of distractions so that I can read God’s Word and pray. When I take the time to focus on spending time with Jesus, it’s much easier to take off my old self and put on the new self.

What’s the hard part for you? Do you get distracted or busy and neglect spending time with Jesus? Or maybe it’s hard for you to let go of your old self?

Hands

Make a list of your “old self” that you need to “take off”. Ask God to help you. Ask God to reveal a person you can share your list with and ask them to help hold you accountable. Then ask God to help you clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience today. Be as specific as you can.

Prayer: Dear Lord, You are compassionate. You are kind. You are humble, gentle, and patient. Thank You for being these things to me. Help me to take off my old self. I want to spend time with You so that I can know you better. I want to put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. I know I can’t do it without you. I love You. In Jesus’s name. Amen.
