Head

Proverbs Chapter 10 is a series of short, contrast-filled proverbs that compare wise and foolish choices. It’s perfect for helping us to understand consequences and character.

“Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.” Proverbs 10:17 (NIV)

Young people (but also adults) often struggle with correction. Correction also means discipline. This verse helps us to understand:

  • Correction isn’t punishment—it’s guidance.
  • Wise people accept help and learn.
  • When we listen, we become examples for others.
Heart

Correction is a gift to us. Imagine that you are on a journey and you get lost. If you were to get lost, would you want someone to show you the way? This is what correction does in the spiritual sense. If we make a wrong decision or a wrong turn, correction helps us get back on track.

Consider these things and discuss them as a family:

  • Why is it hard to listen to correction?
  • How can you tell when someone is trying to help you grow?
  • Who helps you become wiser—parents, teachers, God?
Hands

Discuss helpful advice that you have received from trusted adults. Did you grow from this advice?

Prayer: Lord, help me to listen when I’m corrected. Teach me to love wisdom and be a good example for others. I know that without correction, I will make many mistakes on my own. Thank you for placing people in my life to guide me and correct me so that I can learn and grow. Amen.
