7 | Galatians 2

"Free" | September Message Series on the Book of Galatians

Every one of us is searching for freedom in some way - freedom from burdens, shame, guilt, and expectations of others. Lots of things in our lives make promises to give freedom, but the problem is that they can’t deliver on those promises. Jesus came to give us true freedom, and He always delivers on all of His promises. Through this September series in the Book of Galatians, we’re learning how to avoid the traps of the world and the enemy that leads to bondage and seeking to understand what true freedom looks like through Jesus alone.

Season 2 Episode 7 of Unschooled and Ordinary discusses the Book of Galatians and freedom from the Law through Jesus.

Scripture

Primary Text: Galatians 2:15 – 3:22

Observations & Applications

Read Galatians 2:15-3:22.

1. Read Galatians 2:20. What does Paul mean in Galatians 2:20 when he says, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me”?

2. Read Galatians 3:2. In Galatians 3:2, Paul asks, "Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by believing what you heard?" How does relying on the Spirit differ from trying to earn God’s favor through your efforts?

3. Read Galatians 3:6-9. How does Paul use Abraham’s example in Galatians 3:6-9 to explain faith and righteousness?

 4. Read Galatians 3:13. In Galatians 3:13, Paul writes, "Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law by becoming a curse for us." How does understanding Christ’s sacrifice free us from the burden of trying to earn salvation through the Law?

5. Read Galatians 3:19-22. According to Galatians 3:19-22, what was the purpose of the Law, and how does it relate to the promise of faith in Christ?

Prayer

God, help our starting place be our recognition of our need for Your grace. Lord, help us to recognize where and how we are living under the Law and how it dictates our relationship with You. Lord, help us to walk in the freedom that You provide.

Key Word

The Law: God gave the Law to help His people realize they were sinful and imperfect and therefore needed a Savior - Jesus. When Jesus came to rescue us from sin and death, we no longer needed the Law. Even today, some try to create rules to dictate a relationship with God.
