5 | Matthew 5:8 | Blessed are the Pure in Heart

Reflection Questions

1. Read Matthew 5:8. What word(s) immediately stands out? Pure? Heart? See God? What do you think Jesus is asking of us in this beatitude? In your own words, summarize the meaning of the verse.

2. Reflect on the following passages: Proverbs 4:23; Jeremiah 17:9; 1 Samuel 16:7, Psalm 86:11. How do these passages shape our understanding of the heart? What role does the heart play in our spiritual lives?

3. What does a pure heart look like? How should a pure heart impact our motives? Our love for God? Our service toward others? How we relate to one another?  What are examples of an impure heart?

4. “They shall see God.” We will experience this promise fully in the new heavens and new earth, but how does a pure heart enable us to see more of God now, with the eyes of faith? Spend some time discussing what it will be like to one day see God in all His glory in heaven.
