The Bible: What Is It? | Craig Curtis

I. What is it?
II. How does it work?
III. Who is it about?

What is the Bible?

holy - "set apart"

Bible - "book"

4 Sections of the Bible

Old Testament - God's story & promises

Gospels - Jesus comes and shows us the way

Acts - The Church begins and the Gospel spreads

Rest of New Testament - How followers of Jesus live it out

1. Love it.

Acts 2:42 NIV

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.

2 Timothy 3:14-17 NIV

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

I. What is it?

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful...

2 Timothy 3:16 NIV

2 Peter 1:20-21 NIV

20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

2. Learn it.

1 Peter 2:2-3 NIV

2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Learning God's Word

1. You need a plan.

2. You need a translation you can understand.

3. You need structure for your time.

3. Live it.

Matthew 7:24-25 NIV

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

Parents – What we minimize, our kids will never maximize.

Psalm 119:105 NASB

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
