In the Old Testament, two kid goats were used for the cleansing of the people's sin. One goat was used as a sacrifice to pay the penalty of their sins, and the other goat (the scapegoat) was released into the wilderness, taking with it the blame and condemnation for their sins. Jesus, the real goat, fulfilled BOTH roles. Jesus took all of God's righteous fury so that we could have all of God's grace and mercy.
