As a young boy, Scripture tell us that David chose to know, love, and follow God. In spite of many adversities and failures, he personally experienced God's goodness and faithfulness. It was GOOD - so good that David proclaimed in Psalms 34:8, "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him." The Spirit of God produces the fruit of the Spirit so that the world may taste and see that He is good.
