Bringing What Have to God

Author: Austin Sines

Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

In John 6:14 we find the powerful story of Jesus feeding the 5,000. This is one of my favorite miracles of Jesus. As Jesus taught large crowds, they began to get hungry. Jesus gave His disciples the mission of scrounging up what they could to feed the masses which seemed like an impossible task to the disciples. They came across a young boy that didn't have much but offered what he had which was five small loaves and two small fish. Despite the inadequacy of his offering, the act of faith led to a miracle, and the boy's willingness to give what he had become a catalyst for feeding the crowd.

Sometimes in life, we can feel like what we have to offer isn't an adequate offering for God to use. If I'm being transparent, I have felt like this more than I care to admit. Recently my wife Emily and I started hosting a House Church in our home in Ocean Springs. This was hard for us to do because our home wasn't the newest or the biggest in our friend group. It was easy for us to undermine God's blessing of our home in our lives. When we opened up our home, as inadequate as we felt it to be, God blessed it quickly and we have seen the fruit of growth, salvations, and baptisms from it. No matter the size of the offering, if it's given in faith of our Creator, it can lead to miracles.

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.
Reflection:
  • Use the S.O.A.P. Method to study God’s Word.
  • SCRIPTURE: What stands out to you in today’s passage?
  • OBSERVATION: What is this text saying? What is the context? How does it fit with the verses before and after it? Are there any commands, instructions, or promises?
  • APPLICATION: How can you apply this verse to your life? What does this mean today? What is God saying to you?
  • PRAYER: Respond to the passage in prayer. Ask God to help you apply this truth to your life and spend some time listening to what He may be telling you.
