Daily Devo: Humility Required

Begin with two minutes of stillness and silence before God.

Jesus healed a man who had been blind from birth. You would think this miracle would have moved the religious leaders toward faith. Instead, it moved them toward debate. Rather than celebrating what God had done, they interrogated the man and even questioned his parents, searching for a way to condemn Jesus. They weren’t seeking truth—they were protecting their position. Their response revealed a deep lack of humility. Even a miracle wasn’t enough to soften their hearts or change their stance.

Humility is essential to faith. In fact, it’s the starting point. Humility says, “I know I am not perfect. I know my ways are flawed. I know I need God.” It is the doorway into a relationship with the Creator of the world. Those who walk in humility—laying down their own desires and taking up God’s—discover an abundant life marked by peace and restful rhythms. But those who insist on living life “my way” may get what they want, only to find pride slowly taking over. In the end, pride places a person in opposition to the One True God.

Jesus made it clear that the man’s blindness was not caused by his sin or his parents’ sin. His blindness had a purpose: to bring glory to God. And it did. The man received his sight and came to truly see Jesus, while others stood by and watched—physically seeing, yet spiritually blind.

Through this miracle, Jesus also confronted the pride of the religious leaders. His words to them are piercing:

“Jesus said to them, ‘If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, “We see,” your guilt remains.’” John 9:41 (ESV)

Jesus teaches us that recognizing our spiritual blindness is necessary. We must humble ourselves and ask God to teach us His ways. But if we remain prideful—believing we know more than the Miracle Maker—we remain trapped in our sin. These are powerful words of truth.

Take two minutes to reflect in silence.

Reflection:

Prayer: God, show us our blind spots. As Your Word says, search our hearts and show us what we need to change to line up with Your ways. We are a prideful people, but we desire to walk in humility. Teach us Your ways! In Jesus’ precious name, AMEN!
