Begin with two minutes of silence and stillness before God.
I would consider myself a big sports fan across the board: baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and hockey. I feel like I can confidently sit down and watch any of these and understand what’s happening in the game. However, I wouldn’t call myself a superfan of any particular team. Weird, right?
I have a friend who’s completely different. He’s such a big fan of his teams that I wouldn’t be surprised if he showed up to their games with his chest painted. One night I walked in, and he was watching a football game that had already been played, a game where he already knew the outcome. Because of that, he still celebrated all the big highlight plays his team made, but he never got nervous or worried when the other team made a big play. Watching him made me think about how different the experience of the game was for him. Because he already knew the outcome, he could enjoy the game without fear. Even when the other team made a big play, it didn’t shake him. He knew how the story ended.
In Colossians 2, Paul encourages the Colossians to continue their walk with Jesus, to continue to have faith, and to remain rooted in Him. Their confidence wasn’t supposed to come from new philosophies or popular ideas around them, but from the firm foundation they already had in Christ. The believers in Colossae were hearing that they needed something more: more rules, more spiritual experiences, and more knowledge. Paul reminds them that they don’t need something more than Jesus. Everything they need is already found in Him.
Paul then points them back to the gospel. Through Jesus, believers have been made alive. Their sins have been forgiven, and the debt that stood against them has been canceled at the cross. Because of what Christ has done, sin and death no longer have the final word. Jesus has already won the victory.
When I think back to my friend watching that football game, it makes me wonder how often we live our lives with that same kind of confidence. He could enjoy the game because he already knew how it ended. The big plays from the other team didn’t shake him, and he didn’t panic when things looked bad for a moment. He knew the final result.
But if we’re honest, sometimes we still live like the outcome is uncertain. When life gets difficult, when culture pushes us in different directions, or when doubts creep in, it’s easy to forget that Christ has already secured the victory. Instead of standing firm in Him, we start looking for something else to give us confidence.
So it’s worth asking ourselves a few honest questions:
• Are we building our lives on Christ, or are we constantly looking for something more to satisfy us?
• When life feels uncertain, do we trust what Jesus has already done for us?
• Are we rooted in Christ, or are we letting the voices around us shape what we believe?
• Do we live our lives as if Christ has already won?
